          Cloud Disk Service

          Configuration Problems

How to solve the drive letter drift problem of the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS)?

After being mounted/uninstalled, the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) often faces the drive letter drift phenomenon. You can query the drive letter of the disk by the grep ./sys/block/vd*/serial command. The drive letter queried by the command is not impacted by the disk mounting/unloading, and it is a fixed drive letter.

How to make a periodical complete inspection of the configuration and use of the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS)?

You can subscribe the "Cloud Advisor" services to regularly obtain the inspection reports of resources on cloud in security, availability, performance and cost. The report contains several CDS related check items such as: CDS-Cloud Disk Storage disablement, CDS-low usage rate, CDS-abnormal throughput, CDS-unmounted Cloud Disk Storage , CDS-snapshot time efficiency, CDS-automatic snapshot policy, CDS-high usage rate, etc. Understand or subscribe the "Cloud Advisor" services. Please go to Home Page of Cloud Advisor.

Can't the purchased new Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) be seen in the server?

After being mounted on the console, the purchased new disk in the BCC is not seen in the virtual machine because the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) is not formatted. After purchasing the new Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) , you should first mount the disk. After mounting the disk, you should format the disk before it can be used normally. For the details, please refer to Format Disk.

Note: The formatting causes the loss of all data. If there are any important data in CDS, please back up the data in advance.

How to upgrade the current general HDD to a high-performance Cloud Disk Storage because of error disk selection?

You can "scale up and change the configuration of" the purchased disk by the console or API. Currently, the following items are supported: scaling up of the purchased prepaid and postpaid Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) s, type upgrade of purchased prepaid Cloud Disk Storage s, or type upgrade or degrade of purchased post-paid Cloud Disk Storage s. For the details, please view Online Change of CDS Disk Type.

Can the data of the general HDD be migrated to a high-performance Cloud Disk Storage ?

Yes. You can migrate the data by two methods. One method is to create a snapshot in the general HDD, and then create the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) in accordance with the snapshot. When creating a new disk in accordance with the snapshot, you can configure the new disk as a high-performance Cloud Disk Storage . The other method is that you can change the disk type from the general HDD to the high-performance Cloud Disk Storage by the console or API. For the details, please view Online Change of CDS Disk Type.

How to migrate the data in the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS)?

If you want to migrate disk data under the same account:

          • If you want to migrate the data in the system disk, for the servers under the same region (for example, they are all in North China-Beijing, South China-Guangzhou, etc.), you can migrate the data by creating custom images, and select the custom images created previously when the system is installed in a new server;
          • If you want to migrate the data in the data disk to the same available zone in the same region (for example, the current disk is in the available zone A in North China-Beijing region, and meanwhile you want to migrate the disk to the same available zone in the same region), you can directly mount the Cloud Disk Storage to be migrated to a new server (or you can also create a snapshot for the disk, and then create the new Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) for the snapshot to complete data migration). If you want to migrate the data to other available zones in the same region, you can copy the data by creating a snapshot for the CDS. You can create new Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) s in other available zones in accordance with the snapshot, and mount the disk to a new server for use. If you want to migrate the data in the data disk to other regions, you can complete the immigration by the function of Cross-region Replication of the snapshot

If you want to migrate disk data under the different account:

          • If you want to migrate the data in the system disk, you can realize the quick immigration and environment deployment of the data in the system disk of Baidu Cloud Compute (BCC) in the same region among different accounts by Share Images;
          • Other circumstances: For example, all the cross-account/cross-region (such as Beijing > Guangzhou region) immigration of CDS data, migration of data in the temporary data disk, and cross-region (such as Beijing > Guangzhou Region) migration of data in the system disk is currently be conducted independently only by copying the offline data.

How to scale up the local disk?

The Baidu Cloud Compute (BCC) supports the scaling up of the system disk and data disk of the type of Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) , and doesn't support the scaling up of the non-CDS type disk, including the local disk. If you want to scale up the disk, please ensure to make a snapshot before scaling up to prevent from the data missing risks caused by misoperation.

Note: Currently, the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) supports the online scaling up. After scaling up, you should also partition the file system of the scaled-up Cloud Disk Storage . For the detailed operation, please refer to Scale up CDS Disk.

How does the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) go offline normally?

First, uninstall the disk from the server, for example, umount the disk from Linux system and enable the disk to go offline in Windows system. Then, you can uninstall the disk from the console page. For the specific operation, please refer to Uninstall CDS Disk.

How to mount and use the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) in Windows system?

The data disk of Windows server is in the offline state by default, and may be used only by manual online connection.

          • For Windows 2012, please enter server manager-file and storage service-volume-disk, and connect the off-line disk online.
          • For Windows 2008, please enter server manager-storage-disk management, and connect the off-line disk online.

Can the snapshot exist independently of the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS)?

The snapshot is created in accordance with the data in one disk. So the precondition of creating a snapshot is to create a disk first. However, you can select not to release the snapshot data created by the disk synchronously when releasing the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) . Therefore, the basic precondition of creating a snapshot is there is a disk. However, the corresponding snapshot should be retained when the disk is released.

Should the disk be uninstalled when a disk snapshot is created?

No. You can create a snapshot for a disk in the status of "Mounted", "Unmounted" and "Unloaded", etc. However, if you want to create complete snapshots for the data in the disk, we recommend you to first uninstall the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) , or guarantee no write operation is conducted during the creation of snapshots.

Can the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) purchased separately have an independently existing drive letter when it is mounted to an operation system of a virtual machine of Windows? Is use method of the disk in Windows system exactly the same as that of the local disk?

          Yes.

Can the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) having been mounted to one virtual machine be mounted to other virtual machines after being uninstalled? Can it be uninstalled again and mounted to the original virtual machine later? Can the data be imported to another virtual machine by the mode of "unloading and mounting"?

All the scenarios above are supported.

Can the Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) be shared and mounted among multiple Baidu Cloud Compute (BCC)?

At a certain time, one Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) can only be mounted on one Baidu Cloud Compute (BCC), and cannot be shared simultaneously among various BCC.

How to install the website on the data disk in the Linux server?

The website directory is the path self-defined by you initially. The paths vary by different Web configurations, and the configuration should be made in accordance with the specific configuration files of different Webs.
