          Performance Burst Capability

          Overview

The Cloud Disk Storage (CDS) of cloud platform first released the performance burst capability domestically. The customers can burst and use the CDS beyond the cloud disk performance limitations for a period of time. For example, the IOPS performance of the purchased disk is 200, and can burst to 1300 for a period of time.

As shown in the Table below, when the business selects the physical block for storage, the performance requirements decide the block storage type, and the data size requirements decide the storage capacity. Once the business selects the on-cloud block for storage, the performance requirements decide the storage type, and the performance requirements and data size requirements together decide the storage capacity. The reason is that the on-cloud block storage performance is positively related to the capacity. Because of this, when the business has intermittent high IO performance requirements, the traditional cloud disk service should generally require the purchase of a disk with a greater size of the actually required data to meet the performance requirements. However, the burst capability provided by cloud platform CDS can solve this problem - now you only need to purchase the disk according to the size of the actually required data, and the intermittent high IO performance requirements will be met by the burst capability supported by CDS.

          Advantages

CDS allows a disk of any size to be burst to the maximum performance of the same type

During the operation of the disk, the part lower than the nominal performance will be supplemented to the burst pool, namely, the accumulation of the burst pool is the integral of the nominal performance -actual motion IO along with time. When there is accumulation in the burst pool, the disk allows burst, and the accumulation in the burst pool is consumed in the burst operation. After the accumulation is consumed, the disk operates in the nominal performance. The period for available business is equal to the accumulation of the burst pool/(burst IO -nominal IO performance).

Here we illustrate the principle of CDS performance burst. Suppose the maximum size of the burst pool is 1600000 IO, and the throughput is calculated as each IO of 128KB. The existing nominal performance is that the disk of 1000 IOPS operates for one hour at 200 IOPS. So, the available IO accumulated in the burst pool is min ((1000-200) ∗ 3600, 1600000), and the data size is min ((1000-200) ∗ 3600 ∗ 128KB, 1600000 ∗ 128KB).
