Product Introduction

What is Cloud Disk Service

Cloud Disk Service (CDS) is a reliable and secure high-elasticity storage service that acts as an expandable block storage component for Baidu Cloud Compute, providing high availability and large capacity support for data storage.

  • Cloud Disk Service (CDS) excels in random read/write operations, offering excellent performance in throughput, IOPS, and abnormal recovery scenarios, meeting the needs of most customers across various use cases.
  • The postpaid Cloud Disk Service (CDS) operates independently of Baidu Cloud Compute's lifecycle and features online resizing, CDS type conversions, disaster recovery via automated snapshots, disk rollback options, and various elastic management capabilities.
  • When compared to local disks, Cloud Disk Service (CDS) uses triple-replica technology for data storage, ensuring 99.99999999% data durability. In the event of failures in storage nodes, media, or network switches, data is immediately migrated to other nodes without any noticeable impact on data access.

How to choose a cloud disk

Baidu AI Cloud provides six different types of cloud disks tailored for diverse usage scenarios. You can choose the most suitable cloud disk type based on your specific needs.

CDS type Disk descriptions Application scenarios Disk function
Enhanced SSD_PL3 Single-disk performance up to 1,000,000 random IOPS and latency at the microsecond level Suitable for database scenarios of large-scale core businesses, such as:
Relational databases like MySQL and SQL Server
NoSQL databases
Large-scale Oracle database systems
Data disks and system disks
Enhanced SSD_PL2 Single-disk performance up to 100,000 random IOPS, with high concurrent extreme I/O performance and stable read/write latency Suitable for database scenarios of medium-scale core businesses, such as:
Relational databases like MySQL and SQL Server
NoSQL databases
Mid-scale Oracle database systems
Data disks and system disks
Enhanced SSD_PL1 Single-disk performance up to 50,000 random IOPS, with medium concurrent extreme I/O performance and relatively stable read/write latency Suitable for database scenarios of small- and medium-scale core businesses, such as:
Relational databases like MySQL and SQL Server
NoSQL databases
Small- and medium-scale Oracle database systems
Data disks and system disks
General-purpose SSD A cost-effective general-purpose SSD that balances performance and price, with both high IO and high throughput Suitable for I/O-intensive applications and can serve as the key workload for most core businesses, such as:
· Large-scale OLTP businesses
· Enterprise core business systems
Data disks and system disks
High-performance cloud disk High IO performance with good cost-effectiveness Suitable for most scenarios requiring high IO, such as:
· Small and medium-sized databases
· Core business testing and development environments
Data disks and system disks
General-purpose HDD Low-cost HDD cloud disk suitable for general business scenarios
· Applicable to general business scenarios with low IO but certain throughput requirements
· Business scenarios sensitive to costs
Data disk

Description:

  • Previous-generation cloud disks and high-throughput HDDs have been discontinued; new purchases are no longer supported, and it is recommended that you purchase other types of cloud disks. For existing previous-generation cloud disks or high-throughput HDDs, capacity expansion may fail in some regions. Please change the disk type to a cloud disk of the same price tier or a higher-performance type. Disk type changes are performed online and do not affect the disk’s read/write processes;

    • Enhanced SSD_PL3 and Enhanced SSD_PL2 are currently available only to allow-listed users. If you need to use them, please refer to Disk Type Introduction - Usage Instructions and contact us via a ticket.

Cloud disk pricing

  • You can purchase cloud disks using either the subscription or pay-as-you-go method. For detailed pricing, see [Subscription Billing or [Pay-As-You-Go Billing](https://cloud.baidu.com/doc/CDS/s/4jwvyaopi).
  • Storage fees will also be incurred for snapshot data generated by CDS cloud disks. For details, refer to Snapshot Billing Method.

Cloud disk quotas

CDS cloud disks come with certain quota limits, such as the maximum total cloud disk capacity per region and the maximum number of data disks attachable to a single cloud server.

Category Quantity
Maximum total cloud disk capacity per region 160 TB
Maximum number of data disks mountable to a single cloud server instance 5 (To mount more data disks, please submit a ticket to contact us)
Maximum number of CDS disks purchasable per region max{1, number of instances in the region} × maximum number of disks mountable to a single cloud server instance (default: 5)
Maximum number of manual snapshots creatable per CDS disk 1,000
Maximum number of automatic snapshots creatable per CDS disk 512

For operations when the disk snapshot quota is full, please refer to the instructions in [Snapshot Chains](CDS/Snapshot Operation Guide/Introduction to snapshot/Snapshot chain.md).
