Expansion Overview
Overview
As your business expands, your disk capacity might no longer meet storage needs. You can increase the disk capacity to your desired target size while preserving the existing data on the disk.
Regarding expansion methods, note:
- CDS data disk can only be expanded when in either unmounted or mounted status;
- CDS system disk can only be expanded when it is in operation;
- Expansion cannot exceed the capacity limit of this type of disk;
- It is recommended that users create a disk snapshot for data backup before expanding the disk;
- The previous-generation cloud disk is in the cache release phase, so it will face the scenario of expansion failure. If you want to expand the previous-generation cloud disk, please initiate the Disk Type Change operation at the same time when initiating the expansion operation.
Maximum disk capacity
For CDS Cloud Disk Server expansion, the new capacity must exceed the current data disk size but remain within the maximum supported capacity for the specific disk type.
Data disk capacity limit
For data disks, the expansion limits for different cloud disk server (CDS) categories are shown in the figure below:
| Data disk type | Disk expansion limit (GB) |
|---|---|
| Enhanced SSD | 32765 |
| General-purpose SSD | 32765 |
| High-performance cloud disk | 32765 |
| General-purpose HDD | 32765 |
For specific performance of each type of disk, you can refer to Disk Type. High-throughput HDD and previous-generation cloud disk are no longer available for purchase. If you have purchased high-throughput HDD or previous-generation cloud disk, you can still expand it, but it is recommended to change to other disk types online.
System disk capacity limit
For system disks, SSD cloud disk and high-performance cloud disk are currently supported, with expansion limits as shown in the table below:
| System disk type | Disk expansion limit (GB) |
|---|---|
| Enhanced SSD_PL2 | 2048 |
| Enhanced SSD_PL1 | 2048 |
| General-purpose SSD | 2048 |
| High-performance cloud disk | 2048 |
Expansion operation
1. Expand disk
You need to complete the disk expansion operation through the console or API. For APIs, refer to Disk Expansion and Type Change.
2. Complete partition and file system expansion
After completing disk expansion, you need to sign in to the BCC instance and complete disk partition and file system expansion in either Linux or Windows environment. For the way to sign in to an instance, please refer to Sign in to Instance.
For detailed partition and file system creation operations, you can refer to [Linux Data Disk Partition Expansion](CDS/Disk Operation Guide/Elastic Operations/Resize cloud disks/Extend Disk Partition on Linux Data Disk.md) or [Windows Data Disk Partition Expansion](CDS/Disk Operation Guide/Elastic Operations/Resize cloud disks/Extend Disk Partition on Windows Data Disk.md).
Charge
- When expanding a subscription-based disk, you must pay the additional capacity fee for the remaining subscription period.
- For pay-as-you-go disks, the expanded capacity will be billed immediately after the expansion.
