Overview
Overview
After creating a new CDS Cloud Disk Server Data Disk, you must partition, create a file system, and mount it before performing regular read/write operations.
You can create a CDS Cloud Disk Server in three ways. For specific creation methods, please refer to [Create CDS Disk](CDS/Disk Operation Guide/Basic Operations/Create cloud disks.md). After creation, you can format the disk in both Linux and Windows systems.
Description:
- Formatting a partition will erase existing disk data. You should make sure that the disk is empty before formatting. If you need to preserve Data Disk data, [Create a Snapshot](CDS/Snapshot Operation Guide/Disk Snapshot/Manual Snapshot.md) of the disk;
- Currently, partitioning is only allowed for Data Disks, not for System Disks;
- If you need to expand a partitioned Data Disk, please refer to the expansion guide;
- If you are using CentOS or Ubuntu system, you can use the CDSCMD Tool to perform automatic partition formatting of new disks;
Quick Start
- Details the process of quickly attaching CDS disks, particularly in Linux and Windows environments.
Application scenarios
Common disk partition formats include Master Boot Record (MBR) and GUID Partition Table (GPT). Once a disk is mounted to the server and initialized, switching the disk partition format will erase existing data. Additionally, if disk capacity expansion is required, the current partition format must be maintained. Therefore, choose the partition method carefully.
Regarding the existing MBR and GPT partitioning methods, their main characteristics are:
| Partition format | Supported maximum disk capacity | Supported partition count | Partitioning tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| MBR | 2TB | 4 primary partitions, or 3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition | Windows OS: Disk Management; Linux OS: fdisk or parted tools |
| GPT | The current maximum capacity of a single CDS Cloud Disk Server is 32TB | No limit on disk partition count | Windows OS: Disk Management; Linux OS: parted tool |
Description:
- If your disk capacity is less than 2TB, you may choose to partition it in either MBR or GPT format;
- For disks exceeding 2TB in capacity, the GPT format must be used for partitioning.
You may select the partition type based on your actual requirements. For detailed operation steps, please refer to [Windows OS Format Partition](CDS/Disk Operation Guide/Basic Operations/Format cloud disks/Format Disk Partition on Windows System.md) or [Linux System Format Partition区](CDS/Disk Operation Guide/Basic Operations/Format cloud disks/Format Disk Partition on Linux System.md).
