Company Profile
Baidu is a leading AI company with a strong Internet foundation. With the mission of "to make the complex world simpler through technology," it is committed to innovation and striving to become "a global top-tier tech company that best understands users and helps them grow". 1111
Baidu was founded on January 1, 2000, in Zhongguancun. Its founder, Robin Li, holds the patent for "Hyperlink Analysis" technology, making China one of only four countries globally—alongside the United States, Russia, and South Korea—to possess core search engine technology. Baidu processes billions of search requests daily from over 100 countries and regions, serving as the primary gateway for Chinese-language information and services to 1 billion Internet users.
Built upon search engines, Baidu has developed AI technologies including speech, image, knowledge graph, and NLP. Over the past decade, sustained investments in deep learning, conversational AI OS, autonomous driving, and AI chips have established Baidu as a leading AI company with robust Internet infrastructure. The IT technology stack in the AI era comprises four layers: "chip-framework-model-application". Baidu is one of the few AI companies globally with full-stack deployment across all these four layers. From high-end Kunlun chips to the PaddlePaddle deep learning framework, the ERNIE pre-trained large model, to applications such search, intelligent cloud, autonomous driving, and Xiaodu, each layer features industry-leading self-developed technologies. Leading at every layer enables end-to-end optimization, thereby significantly improving efficiency. At the model layer, ERNIE, Baidu's self-developed industrial-scale knowledge-enhanced large model system, features both knowledge enhancement and industrial-grade capabilities. Currently, the ERNIE large model has been widely applied to Internet products such as search, information feeds, and smart speakers. Through PaddlePaddle's open-source deep learning platform and Baidu AI Cloud, it empowers industries such as manufacturing, energy, finance, telecommunications, media, and education.
In October 2023, ERNIE 4.0 was officially launched. This is the most advanced ERNIE model so far, featuring a comprehensive foundational model upgrade with substantial enhancements in areas like understanding, generation, logical reasoning, and memory capabilities. Its overall performance is described as "comparable to GPT-4."
