Install GRID driver for the GPU instance (Windows)

When your GPU compute optimized instance needs to support the graphic display like OpenGL, install the GRID driver officially published by NVIDIA to use more graphic functions. The installation of GRID driver does not directly activate the NVIDIA GRID License on the computing card of NVIDIA Tesla series mapped with the GPU instance. The GPU graphic function is limited. To obtain the complete graphic function, the operation of activation is needed. Taking the example of compute optimized GPU instance on Windows Server 2016 64-bit, this document describes how to install GRID driver.

Prerequisites

1. Prepare one windows GPU instance and bind EIP to ensure the access to public network.
2. Use windows remote desktop or install on local machine the remote connection tool such as VNC Viewer.

3. Select any of the following ways to obtain GRID License:

   • Contact customer service of the Baidu AI cloud or submit worksheet to obtain the license for temporary test. In this way, it is not necessary to self-built License server.
   • Purchase License from the official website of NVIDIA. In this way, it is necessary to self-build License server. You can purchase BCC instance and build according to the tutorial on the official website of NVIDIA.

Operating Steps

1. Remotely connect the BCC instance.

2. Download the compressed packet of GRID driver.

   • GRID driver for Windows 10, Windows Server 2016
   • GRID driver for Win8, Win7, Windows Server 2012R2, Windows Server 2008R2
3. Open the packet and finish the installation according to instructions

Note：For the Windows system, after the GPU drive become valid, the self-equipped RDP protocol of Windows may not support the relevant applications such as DirectX and OpenGL. You need to install the VNC service and client by yourself.

4. Restart the instance

5. Activate the license of driver.

   • After the installation of GRID driver, click the option of NVIDIA program in the control panel.
   • Fill the License Manager address in the License management options. The default port is 7070 (Check up the firewall configuration and make sure that the network traffic of this port is allowed by the firewall), click to apply.

   • After a few minutes, if a check mark is displayed and you have received permission in Chinese or English, the activation was successful.
